COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government has issued a set of guidelines to Provincial Commissioners regarding the conduct of the first meetings and the election of chairpersons in local government bodies where no political party has secured a 50% majority.
Provincial Commissioners across the country are expected to follow these guidelines.
The Ministry stated that adhering to a uniform procedure for electing chairpersons in local government bodies where no party has a majority will prevent unnecessary legal issues.
The term of office for local government bodies is set to commence on the 2nd of next month.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has notified political parties and independent groups to submit the names of elected members within seven days, based on the number of votes received in the local government elections.
The Election Commission has informed the secretaries of political parties and leaders of independent groups about this requirement.
The Commission has also issued guidelines on ensuring female representation when naming members on the lists.
Once the names are received, the Election Commission plans to publish the names of elected members from each division in the gazette.
