COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya met with U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie J. Chung, at the Sri Lankan Parliament to discuss the evolving trajectory of U.S.-Sri Lanka development cooperation.
The meeting focused on the United States’ commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s development goals, particularly in light of shifting global and local economic dynamics.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya emphasized the importance of exploring alternative avenues for continued U.S. assistance, especially as the country navigates complex economic challenges.
“We had a meaningful discussion on how the United States can continue to support Sri Lanka’s development journey,” said Prime Minister Amarasuriya. “We also addressed the broader implications of U.S. tariffs and their relevance to our long-term economic strategy.”
Ambassador Chung echoed the sentiment, highlighting the strategic reorientation of U.S.-funded assistance programs as an opportunity to deepen bilateral ties.
“This transition period is an opportunity to strengthen our partnership, building on the strong foundation of what we have already achieved together,” she stated. “The United States deeply values our longstanding partnership and remains committed to advancing our bilateral relationship.”
