Colombo (News 1st); Minister of Fisheries, Ramalingam Chandrasekeran, has requested a detailed report from the Sri Lanka Navy following a tense confrontation that occurred during an operation to apprehend individuals engaged in illegal fishing off the coast of Trincomalee.
According to the Ministry of Fisheries, the Minister has instructed the Navy to conduct a comprehensive investigation and submit a report as soon as possible. He stated that appropriate conclusions and further action will be taken based on the findings of the report.
Navy Spokesperson Commander Buddika Sampath confirmed that a naval operation was carried out yesterday (3) to apprehend a group involved in illegal fishing activities in the Trincomalee area.
During the operation, while a fishing vessel was being brought ashore for legal proceedings, several other boats approached the Navy craft.
Individuals aboard these vessels allegedly boarded the Navy boat in an aggressive attempt to free the detained suspects and assaulted naval personnel.
One individual reportedly attempted to seize a firearm from a Navy officer, leading to a physical altercation. During the scuffle, the weapon discharged, injuring one person, who was subsequently hospitalized.
Two Navy personnel were also injured in the incident and have been admitted to hospital for treatment.
