COLOMBO (News 1st); Health authorities indicate a resurgence in the spread of dengue as a result of the prevailing weather conditions.
A total of 6,042 dengue cases were reported in Sri Lanka last month.
Statistical data reveal a gradual increase in dengue cases over the past three months.
Accordingly, 3,766 cases were reported in March, followed by 5,166 cases in April.
A total of 23,744 dengue cases have been reported thus far this year.
According to data released by the Ministry of Health, 13 dengue-related fatalities have been reported this year.
Data released by the National Dengue Control Unit indicate a high percentage of dengue cases reported from the Colombo, Gampaha, Ratnapura, and Batticaloa districts.
Health authorities warn that the current situation could lead to a high-risk dengue environment.
Meanwhile, health authorities also highlighted an increase in Chikungunya cases, a disease spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is also the vector for dengue.
The highest percentage of Chikungunya cases, 63.4%, is reported from the Colombo District.
