Deshabandu Seeks Bail to Avoid Arrest Over Galle Face Attack

COLOMBO (News 1st); Due to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) allegedly preparing to arrest him, Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon has filed an anticipatory bail application before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court seeking an order to prevent such arrest.

He made this request citing the incident involving the attack on the Galle Face protest, claiming there is an intention to take him into custody over that matter.

Upon reviewing the application today (29), Colombo Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura issued a notice to the Officer-in-Charge of Unit 03 of the CID’s Special Investigation Division, instructing them to present facts regarding the matter.

Appearing on behalf of the petitioner, Attorney-at-Law Ajith Pathirana stated that on the day of the incident, his client acted under the instructions of the then President.

He further informed the court that a case related to the incident is currently being heard before the Supreme Court, and that a final verdict has not yet been delivered.

The attorney-at-law requested the court to issue notice to the respondents and to set a date for the hearing of the bail application.

After considering the facts, the Magistrate issued notice to the respondents and scheduled the next hearing for August 5.
