COLOMBO (News 1st); Retired Members of Parliament struggling to make ends meet may be eligible to apply for support under social assistance programs, typically reserved for economically vulnerable citizens, said Sri Lanka's Cabinet Spokesperson Minister (Dr) Nalinda Jayatissa on Tuesday (5).
Jayatissa, revealed that Divisional Secretariats across the country are currently conducting assessments to identify individuals facing financial distress. While the program primarily targets low-income households, it is open to any citizen—including former MPs—who can demonstrate genuine need.
This development comes amid growing concern over the financial wellbeing of certain retired parliamentarians who rely solely on their pensions.
The Cabinet Spokesperson said that the government maintains that fair and reasonable requests will be considered. Existing schemes such as kidney patient allowances and elderly benefits may also be available to qualifying individuals.
