COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Priyantha Jayakody was released on bail today (6) following his appearance before the Kandy Magistrate’s Court.

Jayakody was granted bail under two personal sureties of Rs. 200,000 each and a cash bail of Rs. 10,000.

He was arrested on July 28 in connection with the circulation of false information on social media, which claimed that Kehelbaddara Padme—a known member of an organized crime syndicate—had issued death threats against Jayakody and several others.

Jayakody had previously stated that he, along with former Minister Tiran Alles and Senior DIG Lalith Pathinayake, had received threatening phone calls and text messages from Kehelbaddara Padme on multiple occasions.

Investigations have since revealed that the calls may have been made by another individual acting on Jayakody’s instructions. This detail was disclosed by investigating officers during earlier proceedings.
