Constable Accused of Assaulting Lawyer Granted Bail

COLOMBO (News 1st); A police constable who was in remand custody on suspicion of assaulting an attorney within the Mount Lavinia court premises has been released on bail.

The suspect was produced before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court this (13) morning, where the court ordered his release on two sureties of Rs. 100,000 each.

The incident, which sparked widespread attention, led to a silent protest outside the courthouse today. Protesters demanded justice for the police officer, claiming he deserved fair treatment.

Four lawyers appeared on behalf of the accused constable during the hearing. 

The court further directed that the matter be referred to the Mediation Board for resolution.

The case is scheduled to be taken up again on November 14.
