COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has reaffirmed her country’s unwavering commitment to regional security, declaring that Sri Lanka will never allow its soil to be used in a manner that threatens India’s security.
“This principle remains sacrosanct,” Dr. Amarasuriya said, addressing student at Hindu College in New Delhi.
Her remarks underscored the strategic depth of the India–Sri Lanka relationship, which she described as “structured, not episodic,” and “a necessity of tomorrow.”
Reflecting on India’s support during Sri Lanka’s 2022 economic crisis, she praised New Delhi’s timely assistance, including credit lines, fuel, and essential supplies. “These are not forgotten. They are written in the memory of our people,” she said. “This wasn’t just diplomatic assistance—it was the hand of a true friend extended in our darkest hour.”
Dr. Amarasuriya emphasized that Sri Lanka views India not merely as a neighbor, but as a trusted partner in its journey toward development and prosperity.
She highlighted education as a national priority, with her government committed to reducing the financial burden on families and ensuring equitable access to quality learning.
She also called for collective action to address transnational challenges such as climate change, counter-terrorism, maritime security, and inclusive economic growth. “For India and Sri Lanka, opportunities are boundless. What is required is the wisdom to seize them,” she said.
Addressing young leaders and entrepreneurs, the Prime Minister urged them to embrace cross-border collaboration in areas such as renewable energy, digital innovation, and sustainable agriculture. “The future of the Indian Ocean region depends on young people who can see beyond borders and build partnerships rooted in trust,” she said.
Her closing message was one of hope and unity: “Let us build an India–Sri Lanka partnership so that future generations in both our countries can thrive in an interconnected, interdependent, peaceful world.”
