COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Army has successfully refurbished 76 previously unserviceable vehicles, reintegrating them into its operational fleet—a move expected to save the government nearly Rs. 10 million per month.

The initiative, carried out under the guidance of Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo, Commander of the Army, forms part of a broader project aligned with the Clean Sri Lanka programme.

By restoring vehicles that had been out of service for years, the Army will significantly reduce reliance on rented vehicles and avoid costly imports, conserving valuable foreign exchange.

The first phase of the project, executed by the Sri Lanka Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Regiment, saw the restoration of a diverse range of vehicles, including trucks, buses, water bowsers, Uni Buffel vehicles, cabs, ambulances, vans, and gulley bowsers.

These vehicles will officially rejoin the Army fleet from 24 October 2025.

Officials say the savings generated will be redirected toward Army development and national priorities, marking a major step in cost efficiency and resource optimization.
