COLOMBO (News 1st) - Reconstruction work on the railway system damaged by the disaster following Cyclone Ditwah is progressing steadily.

The Department of Railways confirmed that the Trincomalee–Colombo freight train service resumed operations yesterday.

Reconstruction of the railway line between Ambewela and Badulla has also been successfully completed.

Meanwhile, although restoration work on the Mahawa–Polonnaruwa railway line has been finalized, the line has not yet been reopened for train operations.

The Railway Department further stated that once reconstruction of the Kala Oya Bridge is completed, train services will be able to operate continuously from Colombo to Kankesanthurai, fully restoring rail access along the route.
