COLOMBO (News 1st) - Sri Lanka marks National Safety Day today, commemorated annually on December 26 since 2005 in remembrance of those who lost their lives in disasters, including the devastating 2004 tsunami, and to raise public awareness on disaster preparedness.
A two-minute silence will be observed across the country from 9.25 a.m. to 9.27 a.m. in memory of the tsunami victims.
Director General of the Disaster Management Centre, Retired Major General Sampath Kotuwegoda, said the main National Safety Day commemoration will take place this morning at the Peraliya Tsunami Memorial.
Today marks 21 years since the 2004 tsunami, a day etched in the nation’s memory, when towering waves stole thousands of lives in moments, shattered families, and forever changed communities across Sri Lanka, leaving scars that time has never fully erased.
