CID Probes Inappropriate Content in Grade 6 Module; NIE Director General Resigns

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched a formal investigation into the inclusion of an inappropriate website link within a Grade 6 English language module.

Secretary to the Ministry of Education Nalaka Kaluwewa says, that a team from the CID has already arrived at the Ministry to carry out inquiries. 

He added that the Ministry has taken steps to remove the section containing the link from the module before distribution.

In a related development, Professor Manjula Vithanapathirana, the Director General of the National Institute of Education (NIE), has stepped down from her post temporarily to support the ongoing investigations into the incident.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education also announced that the distribution of school textbooks for the 2026 academic year has begun.

Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa says that distribution has already begun at the zonal level. 

He emphasized that all textbooks are scheduled to be distributed only after a thorough inspection process.
