COLOMBO (News 1st); Four individuals attached to the Department of Motor Traffic, including a serving official and three former officers, have been remanded until the 20th of this month over multiple allegations relating to fraudulent vehicle registrations.

They were arrested by officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption and were produced before Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama this afternoon, after which the remand orders were issued.

Among those arrested is an Investigations and Development Assistant attached to the Development Division of the Motor Traffic Department. She is accused of knowingly accepting a forged document in connection with a request to change the colour of a motor vehicle and issuing a window-number accordingly.

A former Deputy Commissioner of the Department is also among the suspects.

He is charged with approving a certification for a weight-certificate request form submitted with forged documents relating to a motor vehicle.

A former Assistant Director of the Department’s Information and Communication Technology Division was taken into custody over allegations of registering four vehicles that had been imported without customs clearance.

The Bribery Commission said a former departmental clerk was also arrested for entering fake information into the Motor Traffic Department’s computer system and authorising an unlawful registration through an irregular assignment process.
