COLOMBO (News 1st); More than 5.7 million people have registered under the QR code system introduced for fuel distribution, Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said, as authorities reported a steady improvement in fuel availability and shorter queues across the country.

Speaking at a media briefing held this afternoon, the Minister said that over 5,765,000 individuals have so far registered for the QR-based fuel system.

He added that facilities have been provided for the public to report issues related to the QR code system via a dedicated WhatsApp number, 076 019 1919.

The Minister noted that the same WhatsApp number can also be used to report fraudulent activities related to fuel distribution. He further urged the public to use fuel sparingly and contribute towards conserving energy during this period.

Meanwhile, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation said fuel distribution through the QR code system is currently being carried out successfully.

Authorities confirmed that fuel was issued today only to vehicles with even-numbered or zero-ending number plates, in line with the prevailing distribution schedule.

Long queues that were reported at fuel stations across the island in recent days have now significantly reduced. Correspondents reported that in several areas, fuel stations operating under the QR system have largely returned to normal conditions.

Officials said the combination of high public participation in the QR registration process and regulated fuel distribution has helped stabilise supply and ease congestion at filling stations.
