COLOMBO (News 1st); UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a sweeping ban on social media use for children under the age of 16, citing growing concerns over mental health, safety, and the addictive nature of online platforms.
Speaking at Downing Street, Starmer acknowledged the significance of the decision, stating that it had not been made lightly.
He recognised that social media has brought benefits for young people, but emphasised that governing requires making difficult choices where the protection of children must come first.
The Prime Minister said he ultimately concluded that a full ban was the “right choice,” drawing not only on policy considerations but also on his own experience as a parent.
Reflecting personally, he noted that all any parent wants is for their children to be safe and happy, before questioning whether social media today can genuinely provide such an environment.
Starmer argued that social media is contributing to rising levels of unhappiness among children.
He warned that these platforms are making it easier for bullying and harassment to take place, exposing young users to harmful interactions that can significantly impact their mental health.
The Prime Minister further described social media as being deliberately designed to be addictive, with features that encourage prolonged engagement and keep users “locked in for hours.”
He stressed that this constant attachment is interfering with essential aspects of childhood development, including education, rest, and social interaction.
Starmer highlighted how excessive social media usage prevents children from completing homework, reading, spending time with friends, and maintaining healthy sleep patterns.
While these may appear to be routine daily activities, he underscored their importance in shaping well-rounded adults.
