COLOMBO (News 1st); Three suspects, including a Samurdhi Development Officer, have been arrested in connection with the death of a Sri Lankan woman in Oman, who was subjected to various forms of torture.
They were arrested in connection to directing the woman to seek employment in Oman.
The Foreign Employment Bureau reported that the deceased was a 22-year-old woman from Suchi Village in Hambantota.
The suspects allegedly promised the woman and her elder sister jobs in hospitality in Dubai but instead sent them to Oman for domestic work.
Preliminary investigations by the Foreign Employment Bureau revealed that the sisters were sent abroad on tourist visas and were subsequently employed in various locations in Oman without proper jobs.
The elder sister informed their mother that her younger sister had died on the 22nd due to the torture she endured.
As a result, the Samurdhi Development Officer and the other two suspects have been taken into custody and presented before the Hambantota Magistrate, with their remand extended until the 17th.
