COLOMBO (News 1st) - The government has allocated a significantly higher budget for the fisheries sector this year, with the aim of uplifting the fishing community and improving the industry’s contribution to the national economy.

Deputy Minister of Fisheries Rathna Gamage announced that this year's budget sees an allocation two to three times larger than previous years.

The increased funds will focus on enhancing the fishing industry, improving the lives of those working in the sector, and strengthening the overall production economy.

He expressed optimism that the investment would lead to a higher contribution of the fisheries sector to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2025. A new program will also be introduced as part of the budget to achieve these objectives.
