COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, widely known as Pillayan, has filed a Fundamental Rights petition before the Supreme Court, challenging his arrest and detention under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

The petition relates to his alleged involvement in the abduction and disappearance of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Eastern University. Pillayan claims that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) violated his fundamental human rights by detaining him without just cause under the PTA.

In his petition, Pillayan argues that the arrest and continued detention were carried out without sufficient legal grounds, and that the detention order issued against him should be declared null and void. He further asserts that his right to legal counsel has been obstructed, which constitutes a breach of his basic rights.

Through his legal team, Pillayan is seeking a Supreme Court ruling affirming the violation of his fundamental rights and is demanding compensation of Rs. 100 million for the damages suffered.
