COLOMBO (News 1st); The National Council on Road Safety is set to be transformed into a formal Commission, a move aimed at strengthening legal authority and improving road safety enforcement across Sri Lanka.
Chairperson Kumari Jayaratne stated that the transition will empower the body to enact road safety laws and take legal action against violators, capabilities that were previously limited under the existing institutional framework.
She noted that the current structure does not provide sufficient legal authority to implement such measures effectively.
The proposed transformation will also result in a reduction in the number of board members from 17 to 5.
With the establishment of a legal framework and statutory provisions, the new Commission is expected to take more effective and timely actions to enhance road safety nationwide.
Jayaratne confirmed that a Cabinet memorandum has already been prepared to initiate the legislative process required for this institutional upgrade.
