COLOMBO (News 1st); Italy has become the fourth-largest destination for Sri Lankan exports in the first quarter of 2025, marking a significant milestone in the growing economic partnership between the two nations.
This was revealed by Italian Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Damiano Francovigh, during celebrations held in Colombo to mark the 79th anniversary of the Italian Republic.
“According to the latest data, Italy was the fourth market of destination for goods produced in Sri Lanka, showing the potential for our bilateral cooperation,” Ambassador Francovigh stated. He emphasized that the relationship between Italy and Sri Lanka extends well beyond trade, encompassing social, cultural, and political dimensions.
The Ambassador highlighted ongoing efforts to formalize this multifaceted partnership through a series of memoranda of understanding currently under negotiation. “These agreements reflect our joint commitment to deepening collaboration across a wide range of sectors,” he said.
He also announced the forthcoming visit of Italy’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, which he described as a strong signal of political will to further strengthen bilateral ties.
“It is with full dedication to this commitment that we celebrate today the Day of the Italian Republic in Colombo,” Francovigh added. “This occasion not only honours Italy’s democratic foundations but also reaffirms our intention to build a meaningful friendship between Italy and Sri Lanka—two countries bound by history, people, and shared aspirations for the future.”
The event was attended by senior Sri Lankan officials, diplomats, and members of the international community.
