COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police have issued a renewed call for motorists to strictly adhere to lane discipline, citing alarming statistics on road fatalities and traffic congestion in the Colombo District.

Speaking to the media, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) F. U. Wootler, the official Police Spokesperson, emphasized that lane laws are not optional or supplementary, but are clearly defined under Section 148 of the Motor Traffic Act.

ASP Wootler highlighted that five major roads feed traffic into Colombo daily, with nearly 500,000 vehicles entering the city. He revealed that in 2025 alone, 1,332 people have died in road accidents so far. Analyzing data from previous years, he noted that 7 to 8 deaths per day are consistently reported due to traffic-related incidents.

He urged passengers, especially those traveling by bus, to report reckless driving or dangerous behavior by contacting emergency hotlines 119 or 118, providing the bus number and location.

ASP Wootler reiterated that police officers are enforcing traffic laws not only to maintain order but to protect lives. He called on all drivers to respect the law and cooperate with law enforcement for safer roads.
