COLOMBO(News 1st):Police raided an illegal ilmenite mining operation at an archaeological site in the Aruwakkalu of Puttalam, seizing several pieces of machinery used for mining.
The raid was conducted by the Anti-Corruption Unit of the Valana Division following a tip-off received by Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya.
Authorities revealed that both foreign and local workers were involved in the illicit mining activities. Until now, neither police nor government officials had access to the site.
Statements are being recorded from employees at the location as investigations continue.
Noted Sri Lankan archaeologists including Dr. Shiran Deraniyagala, Dr. Nimal Perera, and Professor Gamini Ranasinghe have conducted extensive research here.
The stone tools discovered at the site have been examined and authenticated by world-renowned stone tool expert Professor Peter Hiscock of Australia.
