COLOMBO(News 1st); The rally, organized by a coalition of several opposition parties under the leadership of SLPP National Organizer MP Namal Rajapaksa, was held this afternoon.

It took place in front of the Ananda Samarakoon Open Air Theatre in Nugegoda

Since last night, grass had been hung along the main roads leading to Nugegoda and in several parts of the island.

SLPP Urban Councillor Chaminda Silva removed the grass that had been hung near the Rahula Junction in Matara.

Harin Fernando, UNP Deputy Secretary General of Political Mobilization, emphasized that all party leaders, including the National Organizer Namal Rajapaksa and senior political figures, should unite and work together. He urged the youth to recognize that Namal Rajapaksa, along with other second-tier leaders from parties such as the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, United National Party, Samagi Jana Balawegaya, and Sarva Jana Balaya, should join forces in the ongoing political struggle.

He also highlighted the contributions of senior leaders, recalling Mahinda Rajapaksa as the leader who ended the war in the country, and Ranil Wickremesinghe as the leader who guided the nation during severe economic challenges. He stressed that in parties led by such figures, it is important to keep in mind the threats posed by individuals who have no moral principles.

Meanwhile, Namal Rajapaksa, National Organizer of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, said that their political movement is not driven by personal ambitions but aims to show that they are ready to lead a people’s struggle at any moment, representing their camp and the needs of the public.

He further reminded the Inspector General of Police and public servants of their responsibility to carry out their duties honestly. Referring to comments by the President advising public servants not to engage in politics, he stressed that any political issues with the government would be dealt with directly through political channels.

Rajapaksa also pointed out that leaders who once campaigned in the fields wearing t‑shirts now remain in Colombo in formal attire, while farmers across the country whether cultivating paddy, onions, tomatoes, cauliflower, or other vegetables are facing severe difficulties. He emphasized that farmers are even asked to collect fertilizer before receiving subsidies, and urged the government not to burden them further.

In his concluding remarks, he used the example of a ship to emphasize resilience, saying that a ship is not meant to remain anchored in a harbor but to face storms and challenges at sea. He reminded the government and the President to understand the message being sent, adding that they are building public support and public pressure to challenge and, at the first opportunity, remove the government.
