COLOMBO (News 1st): The Department for Registration of Persons has issued an urgent warning regarding a scam where an external party is using the department's official hotline to illegally obtain personal information.

Authorities revealed that the hotline number 0115 22 61 26 and various WhatsApp messages are being used to solicit data from the public. The department clarified that its officers do not make outgoing calls to citizens using this number and strongly advised the public to refrain from providing any personal details to such callers.

Meanwhile, services at the Department for Registration of Persons have been restricted once again due to a technical fault in its computer system. Consequently, the head office and all provincial offices will only facilitate the issuance of National Identity Cards under the one-day service today. All other standard services have been temporarily suspended.

The department stated that efforts to restore the system are currently underway, and a notification will be issued regarding the resumption of full services once the system is back online. This marks the second time in recent weeks that the department's operations have been disrupted by a computer system failure.
