COLOMBO (News 1st); Railway operations along Sri Lanka’s coastal line have been disrupted following the derailment of the Sagarika train at the Wadduwa railway station.
Due to the incident, train services operating from Colombo along the coastal route have been restricted up to Panadura.
Railway Spokesman Asanka Samarasinghe said that trains departing from Matara have been limited to operating only up to Kalutara.
The derailment, which occurred this morning, caused severe inconvenience to passengers travelling on the Sagarika train as well as those using other services along the coastal railway line.
Many commuters were left stranded and experienced delays as a result of the disruption.
Sri Lanka Railways confirmed that several rear coaches of the Sagarika train had derailed.
According to the Railway Spokesman, efforts to re-rail the affected coaches have already commenced.
Railway authorities said restoration work is currently underway to bring the coastal rail service back to normal following the derailment.
