COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka joined the global community in marking World Elder Abuse Awareness Day today, with a series of awareness initiatives aimed at highlighting the urgent need to protect senior citizens from neglect, abuse, and exploitation.
The National Secretariat for Elders confirmed that the main commemorative event will take place this evening at the Colombo Municipal Council open-air premises.
In line with international observances, the official theme colour for this year’s campaign is purple, symbolising dignity, respect, and justice for the elderly.
Reflecting this message, prominent landmarks in Colombo, including the Colombo Municipal Council building and the iconic Lotus Tower, are set to be illuminated in purple tonight, creating a powerful visual reminder of the need to combat elder abuse.
Director of the National Secretariat for Elders, Chathura Mihidum, stated that the awareness campaign extends beyond symbolic gestures and will be coupled with concrete action across the country. As part of this effort, a comprehensive nationwide survey of elder care homes is being launched from today.
The survey aims to evaluate the conditions and standards within residential facilities for the elderly, with particular attention being paid to their preparedness in handling emergency situations.
