Appeal Court Orders Next Steps in Case Linked to Suresh Salley Protest

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Court of Appeal has directed that further action be taken on a complaint filed by the Fort Magistrate's Court alleging that comments made by a group including several ministers, during a Satyagraha campaign opposing the arrest of former State Intelligence Service Director Suresh Salley, amounted to contempt of court.

Acting on a request by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), proceedings have been initiated before the Court of Appeal against former Ministers and former Parliamentarians Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila, current Member of Parliament Dilith Jayaweera, as well as Sugeeshwara Bandara, Asanka Navaratne, and Mahinda Pathirana.

The complaint, which was referred to the Court of Appeal by the Fort Magistrate, was taken up before a bench comprising President of the Court of Appeal Justice Rohantha Abeysuriya and Justice Priyantha Fernando.

Having considered the facts presented, the bench instructed the Registrar of the Court to proceed with the necessary steps in relation to the complaint.
