COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Supreme Court has dismissed 40 Fundamental Rights petitions challenging promotions granted across several ranks of the Police Service.
The petitions were filed by nearly 1,050 police officers who had not received promotions.
They challenged promotions granted between 2019 and 2023, during the tenures of former Inspectors General of Police Pujith Jayasundara, C.D. Wickramaratne, and Deshabandu Tennakoon.
The petitions challenged promotions from Police Constable to Police Sergeant, Police Sergeant to Sub-Inspector, and Sub-Inspector to Inspector.
In dismissing the petitions, the Supreme Court observed that the petitioners had failed to provide sufficient information to establish that irregularities had occurred in the promotion process.
