Court-Ordered Probe Launched Into Wimal’s Remarks at SLPP Rally

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Colombo Central Crimes Investigation Bureau has launched an investigation to determine whether a statement made by former Minister Wimal Weerawansa at a Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) rally in Anuradhapura on September 12 amounted to contempt of court.

The investigation was initiated following an order issued by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court after submissions made by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).

The matter arose after the Bribery Commission brought the remarks to the attention of court, prompting the Magistrate to direct the Inspector General of Police to conduct an inquiry into whether the statement had caused an affront to the judiciary.

In connection with the investigation, the Colombo Central Crimes Investigation Bureau has reported facts to the Colombo Magistrate’s Court No. 2.

The Magistrate has subsequently directed investigators to keep the court informed of the progress of the inquiry.
