Two Police Teams Probe Polonnaruwa Hospital Explosion

COLOMBO (News 1st): Two police teams have been appointed to investigate the explosion at the National Nephrology Hospital in Polonnaruwa.

Police said a gas pipe leak is suspected to have caused the explosion at the Hospital in Polonnaruwa.

The blast, which occurred in the hospital kitchen at around 4 a.m. today, injured seven hospital employees.

The injured were admitted to the Polonnaruwa Teaching Hospital for treatment.

The hospital spokesperson said that one person has died, while another remains in critical condition.

The deceased was a 36-year-old resident of Habarana.

The explosion caused extensive damage to the hospital’s main kitchen and several surrounding buildings.

Following the explosion, a number of patients receiving treatment at the hospital, were transferred to the Polonnaruwa General Hospital.

Although hospital operations were disrupted by the explosion, arrangements have been made to continue services as normal in part of the hospital.
