COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka's remarkable year in athletics reached its greatest moment yet on Monday as Rumesh Tharanga won the gold medal in the men's javelin throw at the Asian Games 2026, becoming the first Sri Lankan athlete ever to win an Asian Games gold medal in javelin throw.

Competing in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, the Sri Lankan star entered the final carrying the expectations of a nation and the reputation of being the world's top-ranked javelin thrower. By the end of the competition, he had delivered another historic performance, securing the Asian title and adding yet another major international crown to what has already become the finest season of his career.

Competing against a world-class field that included reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan and several of Asia's leading throwers, Rumesh rose to the occasion and produced a winning throw of 88.55 metres to clinch the gold medal.
