COLOMBO (News1st);Today marks the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, observed this year under the theme "Climate action for food loss and waste reduction."
According to the latest United Nations report, 735 million people representing 9.2% of the global population suffer from chronic hunger.
Addressing the situation locally, Dr. W. C. B. Weerasinghe of the Institute of Post Harvest Management in Anuradhapura revealed that nearly 30% of the food produced in Sri Lanka goes to waste. He highlighted that urban areas alone discard approximately 4,000 metric tons of perfectly edible food every day.
To combat this issue, a comprehensive five-year plan has been launched in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to significantly minimize food loss and waste across the country.
