COLOMBO (News 1st): The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has expressed concern over the increasing number of electrocution-related fatalities reported across the country.

PUCSL Communications Director Jayanath Herath revealed that between 100 and 120 people die from electrocution each year, with the highest number of incidents recorded in the Kurunegala and Gampaha districts.

Investigations indicate that the leading cause of these deaths is the absence or malfunctioning of trip switches. Additionally, Herath noted a rise in electrocution cases in the Badulla and Kandy districts, mainly linked to unauthorized outdoor electrical wiring used for animal hunting and crop protection.

The PUCSL is preparing a series of recommendations to help reduce electrocution-related deaths, following a public consultation held on the issue. A detailed report outlining these measures is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
