COLOMBO (News 1st); The Wednesday holiday previously granted to government offices has been cancelled with immediate effect from the day after tomorrow.
Essential Services Commissioner General Prabath Chandrakirthi said that all government offices will operate as usual following the cancellation.
He also confirmed that schools will be conducted as normal on that day.
Sri Lanka earlier declared every Wednesday a public holiday for the government sector with effect from March 18, 2026, as part of a fuel conservation strategy amid growing concerns over potential energy supply disruptions linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
The declaration of a mid‑week holiday was aimed at reducing daily commuting and operational fuel usage across the public sector.
