COLOMBO (News 1st) - Today marks seven years since the horrendous Easter Sunday terror attacks that devastated Sri Lanka.

Religious services have been organized in numerous churches across the island to remember those who lost their lives, or were injured or affected by the tragedy.

The main memorial ceremony will be held at St. Anthony’s Shrine in Kochchikade, Colombo, presided over by His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith.

The National Catholic Council has announced a nationwide two-minute silence from 8:45 AM to 8:47 AM this
morning to honor the victims.

On the 21st of April, in 2019, a dark cloud descended over the nation as suicide bombers targeted Catholic devotees celebrating Easter Sunday.

The coordinated attacks on three churches and seven hotels in Colombo claimed 269 lives.

Beyond those who perished, many others were left with permanent disabilities, serving as a constant reminder of the somber day.

Meanwhile, a special procession demanding justice for the victims of the Easter Sunday attacks will begin today.

Speaking to Newsfirst, Rev. Fr. Jude Krishantha, the Media Director of the Archdiocese of Colombo stated that the parade will commence at 4pm at Maris Stella College in Negombo and will reach the Katuwapitiya Church.

The procession will see participation of His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Catholic clergy, religious leaders, and devotees.

Ambassadors representing the home countries of the foreign nationals who lost their lives in the attack will also be in attendance.
