Colombo-Kandy Road Reopened After Landslide Closure

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Colombo-Kandy road, which was closed in the Mawanella area due to disaster conditions, has been reopened.

The section of the road between Ganethenna and Kadugannawa was temporarily closed yesterday due to a landslide in the Pahala Kadugannawa area.

Police stated that the road was reopened this morning at 06:00 AM upon the instructions of the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO).

Meanwhile, 06 people have died due to disasters caused by heavy rainfall.

Yesterday, 04 people died when a two-story house in Morahenigama, Polpitiya, Ginigathena, was subjected to a landslide.

Police stated that three women and one man inside the house died from the incident.

They were residents of the house aged between 47 and 83, while the other two victims—a 22-year-old male and a 58-year-old female—were relatives who had visited from the Matale area.

Meanwhile, due to heavy rains in the Ambagamuwa area of Ginigathena, a person traveling on a flooded road was swept away by floodwaters and has gone missing.

The missing person is a 45-year-old resident of Ambagamuwa.

Meanwhile, yesterday in the Watawala area, a person walking across the bridge over the Mahaweli River on the Gnananandagama Road fell into the Mahaweli River and drowned.

The deceased is a 53-year-old resident of the Watawala area.

Yesterday morning, in the Solankanda Janawudana Village, Nawalapitiya, a landslide collapsed onto a shop, causing the death of a person inside.

Police stated that a 67-year-old resident of the Solankanda area died in the incident.
