Five Arrested After Violent Clash with Police In Vavuniya

COLOMBO (News 1st); Five suspects have been arrested in connection with an assault on police officers near a bar in the Kumankulam area of Vavuniya.

According to police, the incident occurred on the night of July 11 when two officers from the Nelumkulama Police Station, responding to a report of a person collapsed near the bar, were attacked by a group of intoxicated individuals. 

The officers had arrived at the scene on their official motorbike.

The assailants reportedly claimed they were there to file a complaint, but instead assaulted the officers and damaged their vehicle. The situation escalated, prompting reinforcements from the Vavuniya Police to be called in.

Police were able to disperse the crowd by firing warning shots into the air. A 58-year-old man who had collapsed at the scene was later pronounced dead.

Two suspects had already been arrested earlier in connection with the incident, bringing the total number of arrests to seven.
