62,000+ Public Sector Jobs Approved

COLOMBO (News 1st); Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa announced that approval has been granted for the recruitment of 62,314 individuals into the public service over the past eight months.

Speaking at a press briefing, Dr. Jayatissa revealed that a special committee headed by the Secretary to the Prime Minister has been tasked with overseeing all public sector recruitments. 

Ministries submit proposals to this committee, which includes representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the Department of Management Services, and the Ministry of Public Administration. These bodies collectively evaluate and approve recruitment plans on a rolling basis.

“Some of these recruitments have already been finalized, while others are in various stages such as examinations and interviews,” Dr. Jayatissa explained. “Graduates are encouraged to apply, and the Ministry of Education is also preparing to recruit thousands of new teachers in the near future.”

He emphasized that the government is committed to providing meaningful employment, not just filling positions arbitrarily. 

“We are not interested in hiring 50,000 or 60,000 people at once without proper infrastructure like desks or chairs. Nor do we support politically motivated mass recruitments,” he added.

Dr. Jayatissa also noted that many applicants have already been absorbed into the public service, and there is no need for protests or demands regarding these appointments.
