COLOMBO (News 1st); The Sri Lanka Aviation Unit, deployed under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), has received high praise and official commendation for its exceptional performance during a high-risk Casualty Evacuation (CASEVAC) mission on 14 June 2025.

Operating in a volatile and hostile environment, the unit successfully evacuated three critically wounded UN personnel from Zemio using an Mi-17 helicopter (UNO 326P). The mission demanded precision flying, rapid decision-making, and seamless teamwork under extreme pressure.

The aircrew included:

Wing Commander Ishan Thibbotumunuwe (Captain)

Wing Commander Nadun Deneththi (Co-pilot)

Flight Sergeant Chandana AMG

Sergeant Perera GGPK

Corporal Weerasinghe KPS

Corporal Rodrigo DVMP

The extraction site posed multiple challenges, including dust-heavy landing conditions, an unstable tactical situation, and rapidly evolving ground threats.

The team also executed a night-time extraction in adverse weather, relying on Night Vision Goggles (NVG) to ensure safety and precision.

Despite these obstacles, the crew maintained composure and professionalism, completing the mission in 3 hours and 50 minutes, and safely transporting the casualties to Bria for urgent medical care.

In recognition of their bravery and expertise, the Force Commander of MINUSCA presented commendations to the Captain, Co-pilot, and the entire Sri Lanka Aviation Unit on 17 August 2025.

This mission is part of a broader legacy of excellence. Since their deployment in December 2024, the 10th Sri Lanka Aviation Unit has successfully completed 16 CASEVAC missions, saving 18 lives under hazardous conditions.
