COLOMBO (News 1st); Trade unions representing employees of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) have announced the escalation of their ongoing industrial action, citing unresolved concerns over the government's restructuring process and a list of 24 key demands.
The unions initially launched a work-to-rule campaign on September 4, strictly adhering to official working hours and duties.
However, starting midnight tonight, the unions will intensify their action.
The protest grows from dissatisfaction with the restructuring of the CEB into four separate companies, a move that came into effect on August 27 under the revised Electricity Act.
Employees have been issued letters assigning them to these new entities, but union leaders argue that the process lacks transparency and fails to safeguard workers’ rights and benefits.
