Cardinal Expresses Optimism Over Current Government’s Easter Attack Investigations

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Archbishop of Colombo, His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, stated that the current government is maintaining a positive stance regarding the investigations into the Easter Sunday terror attacks.

His Eminence emphasized this while participating in the main commemorative service held today at the St. Anthony's Shrine in Kochchikade, Colombo.

Religious services were organized in numerous churches across the island to commemorate those who lost their lives, those injured, and all those affected by the tragedy.

The event saw the participation of various religious leaders, including the Chief Sanghanayake of Dhakshina Sri Lanka of the Sri Lanka Ramanna Maha Nikaya, Venerable Dr. Omalpe Sobhita Thero, The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka, Marc-André Franche, the Catholic clergy, religious leaders, and devotees.

Ambassadors representing the home countries of the foreign nationals who lost their lives in the attack also attended the service. 

A nationwide two-minute silence from 8:45 AM to 8:47 AM was observed this morning to honor the victims.

On the 21st of April, in 2019, a dark cloud descended over the nation as suicide bombers targeted Catholic devotees celebrating Easter Sunday.

The coordinated attacks on three churches and seven hotels in Colombo claimed 269 lives.

Beyond those who perished, many others were left with permanent disabilities, serving as a constant reminder of the somber day.
