COLOMBO (News 1st); Amid concerns raised by journalists over the potential impact of the U.S. decision to reduce reciprocal tariffs on Sri Lankan imports from 30% to 20%, Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Secretary to the Treasury, has clarified that Sri Lanka remains committed to its IMF programme and is open to engaging with stakeholders should any adjustments be necessary.
The question arose during a media briefing, where a journalist asked whether the tariff change—announced by President Donald Trump after Sri Lanka had already entered into its IMF agreement—might require renegotiation of the deal.
“Sri Lanka has entered into an IMF programme, which we are all aware of, and there are certain parameters we need to comply with as a nation,” Dr. Suriyapperuma responded. “Wherever there are necessities, we are open to discuss with all stakeholders involved.”
He emphasized that Sri Lanka is not navigating its economic recovery alone, but with the support of multilateral partners and friendly nations, including the United States. The Treasury Secretary described the current moment as a collective obligation to seek support and collaboration to ensure the country’s success.
“Instead of cornering ourselves, we must engage everyone in discussions and negotiations to see how we can succeed and possibly reduce the rate further,” he added.
