COLOMBO (News 1st): The National Council for Road Safety Sri Lanka states that wearing seat belts can reduce accidents by 40%–45%, according to recent studies.

Chairman Manjula Kularatne said the goal of the ongoing program is to gradually accustom the public to safe traffic practices.

He emphasized that wearing seat belts significantly contributes to safer driving and enhances the safety of passengers and property.

As of yesterday, rear passengers in light vehicles traveling on expressways are required to wear seat belts. This follows a regulation introduced on July 1st making it mandatory for bus drivers on all roads to wear seat belts.

Starting from the first of September, seat belts will be mandatory for all passengers in vehicles traveling on expressways.
