COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) says there has been a significant increase in plastic and other waste materials entering Sri Lanka’s marine ecosystem from India, carried by the monsoon winds.
MEPA Chairman Samantha Gunasekara stated that the highest concentration of such waste has been observed in the coastal areas of Kalpitiya, Negombo, Mannar, Jaffna, and Delft.
In response, the Ministry of Environment has launched a special investigation into the matter.
Deputy Minister of Environment Anton Jayakody noted that discussions will be held with Indian authorities in the near future regarding this issue.
